Before we begin tackling love, we need to define it.

You should know something about love…and how I view it…

God is love.

One could say “I’m not here for some religious crap” and that’s fine. However, this series is not a sermon. However, I do use a biblical foundation and if that’s something you want no parts in, you can turn around, though I don’t recommend it.

There is one passage that gives a clear look, or as clear as possible, of what love is.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 (NKJV):

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;  does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

That’s love. As you can tell, we don’t always love…or at least show it. Let’s break it down.

Love suffers long…longsuffering…that’s a fruit of the Spirit. Love can tolerate a lot of things. It is kind. Another fruit of the Spirit.

It does not envy. So, it doesn’t look at other people’s stuff with a desire to have. Instead, you are happy for that person and what he has. Love doesn’t parade itself. So, no bragging, buddy. Pride just before the fall. All of that. Same for puffed up.

It doesn’t behave rudely. Remember, it is kind. It does not seek its own. So, it’s not selfish. It is not provoked. Love is strong and can’t be pushed around. Cool. Thinks no evil. Notice the key word: Think. Forget about acting it out; the idea you would think it is not of love.

It doesn’t rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth. Basically, love wants justice.
It bears, believes, hopes, and endures all things. We talk about how strong love is in not being provoked. Yet, it is strong in a sense of optimism. Endurance. Endurance of what? All things. In fact, the “all things” quote is really interesting. Ultimately, you could say love is everlasting. It won’t fail. It doesn’t give up. It keeps going. Fighting.

Now that we know what love is, it’s time to really hit this series hard. I hope you’re ready.
