Let’s talk about the first commandment. It’s a simple one: Have no other gods before Me. But ya know what? Let’s use the NKJV wording. This will be so for the whole series.
“You shall have no other gods before Me”
What does this mean?
Well, theoretically, God means actual “gods”. What’s interesting is that He says “before me” as if to say…He’s number one in your life. HOWEVER, we also need to understand that He is the one true God anyway.
I made a reference about this commandment in my book, but the way I used it was probably not how I am about to describe it here. It’s almost a contradiction. Fantastic.
If we talk about life in the 21st century, we can adapt it. So, “other gods” can mean a TV show, car, people, and more. In this way, we would violate this rule if we place that TV show higher on our list of attention and dedication than God. We get into some serious fandom of such shows when some people literally worship a character or the entire show itself. It happens. I’ve seen it.
Is there a law based on this commandment in the USA? No, and there likely will never be. We live in a freedom of religion world. Worship God, the sun, or a shoe. The USA does not care. It also goes to lengths to protect people from being discriminated for who they worship.
These are part of the reasons why Christians need to hold onto the laws of the Bible, while at the same time, making sure we indeed follow the laws of the world. Luckily, there is no law to tells us we must worship another god. Otherwise, we’d be going down the Daniel road. I wouldn’t mind, but rather not. There are also places where worshiping God is illegal. USA may allow you to worship anybody, but at least you’re free to worship God. I’ll take it.
